Black Thai
This is a black version of a Thai pepper. We enjoyed growing this plant for its beautiful dark foliage that changed colour throughout the year, just like the pods. During the ripening process, the fruit turns very dark purple / black from an initial light green, but finally ripens to red. You will still see the dark colour when you open the pods as you can see in the pictures. The ripe peppers are relatively thin walled for a Cap. annuum and have a medium heat level.
The dark colour is especially present where the pods receive direct sunlight. You’ll notice the undersides in the shade remain green. This dark pigmentation is anthocyanin, which accumulates mostly in young stems, leaves and fruit of certain plants. Anthocyanin not only makes the plants pretty to look at – it also protects them from pests and pathogens, attracts pollinators and might even have health-promoting properties! (read more here).
